Vauxhall/Opel has launched its first-ever attempt at the upmarket B-Segment sector. Named Adam, the supermini bowed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show and is termed by Vauxhall/Opel as a "fashionable urban car". Designed to compete with the Mini hatchback, the Adam measures at 3695mm long and 1720mm wide and seats four full-size adults in what is described as a "premium level" atmosphere. Three retro-named grades will be available, each with their own persona. The base 'JAM' is fashionable and colourful, mid-spec 'GLAM' is elegant, refined, and sophisticated, while the range-topping 'SLAM' is sporty and energetic. Each model will be highly customisable, allowing shoppers to order a bespoke car, although standard features will include 16" alloy wheels, six airbags, ESP, cruise control, daytime running lights, air-conditioning, electrically adjustable/heated door mirrors, seven-speaker audio system with USB port, AUX input, and steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth, and a leather steering wheel. Three petrol units will be available at launched, matched to a five-speed manual transmission. The entry-level 1.2 litre VVT produces 51kW (69bhp/70PS), while a larger 1.4 litre is obtainable with two outputs: 64kW (86bhp/87PS) and 74kW (99bhp/100PS). An ecoFLEX package is offered at extra cost and includes a stop/start system and gear shift indicator.
